Ajwa: The Prophet's Date Named in Hadith

Among all date varieties, Ajwa holds a special place because it is named directly in authentic hadith. That is why it is known as the Prophet's date. In Sahih al-Bukhari no. 5445 (also reported in Sahih Muslim no. 2047), narrated by Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas, the Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever eats seven Ajwa dates in the morning, poison and magic will not harm him that day."

Scholars such as Imam Al-Khattabi explain that this virtue is understood as the blessing (barakah) of the Prophet's supplication, not merely a physical property of the fruit. Eating seven Ajwa each morning is therefore a sunnah practiced on the basis of faith and blessing, not a medical treatment claim. We present this as a virtue within Islamic tradition, not a health prescription.

What Does Modern Science Say?

Beyond religious virtue, Ajwa has drawn the attention of food researchers. Here are findings published in the scientific literature:

1. High Antioxidant Content

Ajwa fruit and seeds are rich in phenolic compounds and flavonoids with strong antioxidant properties. Studies show Ajwa is among the date varieties with the highest phenolic concentration. These antioxidants are associated with combating oxidative stress in the body.

2. Relatively Low Glycemic Index

Although sweet, Ajwa has a relatively low glycemic index (around 42-49 in some studies), lower than several other date varieties. This means the rise in blood sugar after eating it tends to be gentler — though people with diabetes should still consult a doctor.

3. A Source of Fiber and Minerals

Ajwa provides good dietary fiber and minerals such as potassium, magnesium, and calcium. The fiber aids digestion, while the minerals support everyday bodily function.

4. Promising Preclinical Research

Various preclinical studies (in animals/cells) highlight antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and organ-protective activity of Ajwa extracts. Important note: preclinical findings do not necessarily translate to humans and require further research.
